Personalised Embroidered Gifts

Description: Personalised gifts to celebrate a friends engagement.
Material: Flannelette for the Dogs Coat
Pattern: Echidna Sewing Dog Coat

I created this gift as something a little extra for a friends engagement present. It’s basically personalised bath/lounge wear for the whole family, including two dressing robes and a dog jacket.

The two embroidery designs included a four leaf clover from Ultimate Stash (since he’s Irish) and a monkey with a syringe from Etsy (since she’s a nurse). I found that the registration on the monkey embroidery design wasn’t that great and probably needed a bit of work to fix the density and pull compensation.

I ended up hooping the robe in the hoop, rather than floating the fabric and baste stitching it down. Mostly because the robe material wasn’t very thick and it was just easier to line it up. Here are the results…

I wanted to make the name on the back as large as the bigger hoop but when I created the text in the Brother Dream Machine with the inbuilt text editor it only went up to 20cm width. So instead, I ended up creating the text using Embrilliance and then just imported it in as a normal embroidery design. I was really happy with the results because I got the design up to about 29cm width.

To make the matching dog coat I just went to Spotlight and got some flannelette material. I embroidered the design first, which was a Dog Bone embroidery design from Ultimate Stash. This dog coat is reversible and adjustable, since I wasn’t completely sure of their dog’s measurements and didn’t want to give away the surprise by asking them to measure him.

The engagement party ended up being a “surprise we got married already” celebration, which was incredible. When we gave them a call this morning knowing they would be recovering from the big night, it was nice to hear they were all snugged up in bed, going through all the gifts. Thankfully they loved their family lounge wear, with the dog jacket fitting their puppy perfectly! It even made them laugh at how we personalised it to suit their whole little family.

I always love making something that’s a little bit more unique to add to an engagement or wedding gift. I still go to my best friends house to discover the beach themed wedding quilt that I made them lying on their couch, three years after their wedding! So it’s definitely a nice touch to create something personalised and handmade!

I hope you enjoyed! Happy Sewing or Embroidering!
